About CAHS

Conway Area Humane SicietyThe Conway Area Humane Society (CAHS) is conveniently located in Conway Village at 223 East Main Street (Route 113). We have been in operation with our Cat Adoption Center since June 2003.

Our Dog Adoption Center was completed in June 2004. During our first year of operation, we were able to give second chances to over 700 animals. Since then, we have helped a total of nearly 10,000 animals. We have received owner-relinquished pets from as far north in New Hampshire as the Canadian border and as far south as the Massachusetts border and the shelter has contracts with 13 New Hampshire towns. We also accept dog transports from partners from over crowded shelters in the midwest and southern states.

The Conway Area Humane SocietySince 2010 shelters in the northeast have experienced a decline in cat intake. We believe the reason for this is that people have become much more knowledgeable about spay/neuter, and many communities, including ours, have low cost spay/neuter clinics. We still see an influx of kittens in the spring and summer, but nothing like when we first opened our doors in 2003.

We have increased our dog transport program that now includes partnerships with three shelters and rescues that pull dogs from high-risk facilities, put them into foster care, and then transport them to New England and eventually to CAHS. The demand for adoptable dogs is great, and our average length of stay is 4.4 days, a remarkable change from even 5 years ago when animals often languished for weeks and even months in the shelter.

How Can You Help?

CAHS does not receive state or federal funding. We are a 501(c)(3) private non-profit animal shelter that relies on contributions from individuals, revenue from events and any funds we receive from grant foundations. CAHS has many donor-based programs that help the animals. Below please find links that will provide more information on these fundraising efforts.

Our “Live Release Rate” is 96.5%

A shelter’s “Live Release Rate” is the number of live outcomes divided by the number of total outcomes.
As a participant in the Million Cat Challenge and Shelter Animals Count, Conway Area Humane Society is proud to report our statistics which tell us where we are, where we’ve been, and where we want to go. Click this link to download our statistics in PDF format.
